Turn off user account control in Windows
By switching off the user account control under Windows Vista or Windows 7, the security questions are deactivated. For example, you do not have to separately grant admin rights when installing a program. However, keep in mind that user account control should also protect against unwanted changes to the system. Therefore, only switch them off if you are familiar with the matter.
Switch off the Windows user account control via the control panel
If you would like to deactivate the Windows user account control, there are basically two options. The easiest way is to call up the setting via the control panel:
- Click the Windows logo in the lower left corner to bring up the Start menu.
- Open the "Control Panel".
- Enter "Maintenance Center" in the search box at the top right ("Search Control Panel").
- Click on "Maintenance Center", next to it is a blue flag. Now navigate to "Change user account control settings" in the left bar. A new window opens (see screenshot).
- Use the mouse to drag the slider all the way down, as can be seen in the screenshot. Then confirm the setting with "OK". You may have to restart the computer. Then the Windows user account control is switched off.
The quick way: This is also how you deactivate the user account control
The following procedure, which you use to switch off the user account control under Windows 7, is a little trickier, but also faster:
- Click and hold the Windows key and "R" on the keyboard.
- In the new "Run" window, enter "UserAccountControlSettings" and confirm with the Enter key. Lower and upper case are not critical.
- Now drag the slider all the way down, as described in point 5 above. Confirm with OK".
The tips refer to a system with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. To turn off User Account Control under Windows Vista, you can follow the first procedure. However, instead of the "Maintenance Center" you control the "User Accounts" and then click on "Switch User Account Control on or off". In the following window, remove the tick from "Use user account control to help protect the computer" and confirm with "OK".
