Coating of the Macbook display comes off - what to do?
What you can do if the display coating of your Macbook comes off - the so-called Staingate, read in this practical tip.
MacBook display: coating peels off - what is staingate?
For some Macbook Pros with Retina screens, there have been major problems with the screen coating in recent months: The reflective surface is loosened in several places, mostly on the frame and on the camera.
- So far there is no official statement from Apple on the staingate problem.
- Most affected customers hear from Apple Support that this problem is their own fault as a result of improper display cleaning - it is therefore not a guarantee case.
- However, based on the numerous reports, it can be assumed that this is not a problem caused by the customers. Our Macbook Pro also suffered such damage on the display, but Apple has replaced it free of charge.
Affected by the display damage - this is how you can proceed
If you are affected by staingate, do the following:
- Call Apple Support on 0800 6645 451 and describe your problem. You will usually be asked to show your device to an Apple dealer in your area for inspection or to send photos of the defective areas.
- Even if the retailer or Apple Support insists on your fault for the display damage after checking your device, don't give up yet: point out the numerous similar cases in the past few months to the employee and that Apple has considered this a warranty case.
- Over 1300 customers (as of April 2015) with the same problem have already registered on the website www.staingate.org. You too can contribute to the database with pictures and information. When you contact Apple Support, also refer to this database.
- Until Apple makes an official statement about Staingate, you can only hope for the goodwill of the Apple employee - unfortunately, this does not exactly speak for Apple's service with such an expensive product. With a little persistence, you can achieve a lot - even if the Apple warranty has recently expired.
