Microsoft, Apple and Google always speak of billions of users. We'll tell you which operating systems have the highest market shares and which are at risk of extinction.
Overview of market shares of computer operating systems
Windows runs on most computers around the world. With around 88 percent market share, Microsoft is the undisputed number one with Windows. The remaining percentages are shared by Apple and Linux. The following numbers are from January 2017.
- Windows 10: 24.36 percent market share
- Windows 8: 6.9 percent market share
- Windows 7: 48.34 percent market share
- Windows XP: 9.07 percent market share
- Mac OS X: 4.14 percent market share
- Linux: 2.21 percent market share
- Others: 4.98 percent market share
Market share of mobile operating systems
The following dates are from 2016:
- With mobile operating systems, the forces are similarly unevenly distributed. Google claims around 84 percent market share with Android.
- Apple's iOS is in second place. Over the years, Apple has steadily expanded its market share and has stagnated at around 14.8 percent market share for a long time.
- Windows Phone and the Blackberry OS are dying out. Windows Phone only has a market share of around 0.7 percent.
