The bidet is rather rare in Germany. In southern countries, such as Italy, it is standard. How sensible are these shower toilets and is moist toilet paper a thing of the past?
Bidet: The shower toilet is so useful
The term originates from French and originally denotes a horse breed. Since a bidet is practically "mounted" like a horse, the name came about.
- Whether such a shower toilet makes sense depends on your personal preferences. Many people swear by moist toilet paper, which also leaves a subtle fragrance.
- In addition, the toilet paper still provides a barrier between your fingers and anus. On a bidet, there is no shortage of hands and direct contact.
- From an ecological point of view, however, a bidet has the advantage that you need less toilet paper and can also save money.
- There is also no problem of possible incompatibilities with cosmetic substances from moist toilet paper.
- Especially with various skin conditions or hemorrhoids, the bidet offers a gentle and thorough cleaning and also allows the use of medical hip baths.
- For people with physical disabilities or the elderly, a shower toilet can be a useful addition because it is easier to use than going to the shower or bathtub, where there is also a risk of slipping.
How do you use a bidet?
The type of use depends on the experience and your personal preferences.
- You can use it with your face to the tap or vice versa.
- Depending on the equipment, you can close the bidet with a stopper and fill it up with water like a bowl.
- Then you can clean the genital area with your hands or a rag and possibly mild soap.
- If the bidet has an intimate shower, it is also sufficient if you crouch down and use the intimate shower like a shower head.
- After cleaning, dry the area with a towel. However, there are also shower toilets that have an air dryer and save you drying out.
How is a bidet set up?
A bidet is at about the same height as the toilet and looks like a small sink.
- It has a tap and some models also have an intimate shower. With the help of such a shower toilet, the anus and intimate areas can be cleaned with water.
- Some bidets are even equipped with an air dryer.
