If you have to call up the BIOS because of problems with your system, you will quickly notice that this is not always that easy. The time window is very small and the number of possible buttons is very large. We'll tell you how to get into the BIOS.
How do I call the BIOS?
To open the BIOS, a certain key must be pressed when the computer starts. Switch on your computer, you will first see a few notes and possibly also the manufacturer's logo. At this point, the button must be pressed (preferably several times) so that you get the right time. You can read which key you need in the next paragraph.
Open the BIOS at the touch of a button when the computer starts
Depending on the manufacturer, the BIOS is called using a different key or key combination. The following list shows the most frequently pressed keys in descending order:
- The "Delete" key is most often used.
- It is often also the "F1", "F2", "F8" or "F10" keys.
- The tab key is rarely represented. You will find this on the far left of the keyboard, printed with two arrows.
- If none of these keys work, press "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "Esc" or "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "S" at the same time.
BIOS commands sorted by manufacturer
If you don't want to search for the right combination for a long time, use the following list to find out directly the common method for the respective manufacturer. Unfortunately, not every manufacturer adheres to its usual practice for every model.
- Acer: F2 or Ctrl + Alt + Esc
- Asus: F2
- AMI / American megatrends: Del, Del or F1
- Award: Del, Del, F2, Esc or Ctrl + Alt + Esc
- Compaq: F10
- Dell: F2
- HP: F10
- Packard Bell: F2
- Phoenix: Del, Del, F2, Esc or Ctrl + Alt + Esc
- Sony Vaio: F2 or the Assist key
- Toshiba: Esc or F1
