Change the BIOS battery in the PC - how it works
If you constantly reset the BIOS settings or the time, you will probably have to change the BIOS battery. You only need a few simple steps.
Replace the motherboard's BIOS battery
The BIOS battery is installed somewhere on your mainboard. To do this, you need to open your computer.
- Disconnect all power from your computer.
- Ground yourself by touching a radiator or similar. Then screw on your PC.
- If you have the manual for your mainboard, you will find the location of the BIOS battery on it. Otherwise, you'll need to look for a button cell that looks something like a large watch battery.
- Once you have found the battery, detach it from the mainboard.
- Then insert the new BIOS battery. You can buy these, for example, on the Internet or from a computer dealer. You can find the exact type designation directly on the button cell. The battery is usually named "CR" plus a four-digit number.
- Screw your computer back on and connect it with the power cable. Now the BIOS and time settings are retained.
To protect your BIOS from changes, you can also create a BIOS password.
