Create BIOS password - how it works
To protect your BIOS against unauthorized access, you should create a password for it. We have put together instructions for each of the two most common BIOS types here. You can see which BIOS you have when you start the computer with a logo or lettering.
AMI, Phoenix, Award: Protect BIOS with password
- Start your computer and from now on press to the point at which Windows starts again and again on the key "Del", "F1", "F2", "F8" or "F10" to start the BIOS,
- Now use the right arrow key to navigate to the "Security" tab, which is located at the top right of the screen.
- Click on the down arrow key until you have reached "Change Supervisor Password" or "Change User Password". With the "Supervisor Password" only access to the BIOS is protected, with the "User Password" you can protect the entire PC with a password.
- Select one of the two options, press "Enter" and enter a password. Avoid umlauts, as the English BIOS could have problems with this. Then click on "Enter". Repeat the password and press "Enter" again.
- If you have set a "User Password" that should be requested when the computer starts, you have to set the option "Password on boot" or "Password Check" to "Enabled" or "Always" depending on the BIOS.
- Navigate to the "Exit" tab above and select the "Exit Saving Changes" item. Confirm the query with "OK".
Depending on the BIOS version, the individual points can be labeled or arranged differently. If you have problems opening the BIOS, you will find help in this practical tip.
