BIOS reset: how it works
A reset helps if you have made incorrect settings in the BIOS and as a result your system no longer runs properly. There are different methods of performing a BIOS reset using the system. But only one can be used on all mainboards. In our tip, we want to show you how to do this.
A BIOS reset is not complicated, but it can have consequences
Caution is advised: removing the power source will reset your BIOS to the factory settings. Under certain circumstances you may have to change some basic settings after a BIOS reset: For example, unlock the graphics card or set up the second IDE hard disk again.
- Shut down your computer. Disconnect it from the mains. Then press the power button again to consume the residual current in the device.
- Remove the side wall of the PC.
- You will find a small button battery on the mainboard. If you push the lock, in our case at the bottom edge, slightly to the side, the button cell will come towards you.
- Since there are differences between the manufacturers, wait about two minutes before you insert the battery again. You can then reassemble your computer.
Reset BIOS: Tips & tricks for the reset
- On new motherboards you will also often find a reset button or plug, which you can use to reset the BIOS without removing the battery. The BIOS is reset using a jumper.
- In the BIOS menu itself you will usually also find the "Factory Reset" menu item. If you click this, the BIOS is reset to the delivery state. After the first restart, check whether the time has been set correctly in the BIOS.
