BitLocker To Go: How to encrypt your data with the tool
With the Microsoft tool "BitLocker To Go" you can encrypt data on USB sticks and other removable media. We explain in our practical tip how to use the program.
Which Windows versions contain "BitLocker To Go"?
Only the expensive versions of "Windows 7" and "Windows 8" are delivered with the Microsoft tool "BitLocker To Go".
- Windows 7: "Ultimate" and "Enterprise"
- Windows 8: "Pro" and "Enterprise"
Encrypt data with "BitLocker To Go"
- First format the removable disk in NTFS, FAT, FAT32 or exFat. We advise you to use the "FAT" format, as this is supported by "Windows Vista" and "XP" (see end of article). Caution: All data is deleted when formatting.
- Now transfer the files to be encrypted to the removable disk.
- Click "BitLocker Drive Encryption" in the "Control Panel".
- Next to the corresponding removable disk, select "Activate BitLocker" on the right (see screenshot).
- Now check the box "Use password to unlock the drive" and enter your desired password.
- In the next window, you should print the recovery key and save it in a safe place as a file. If you forget your password, you can access the removable disk with the key.
- If you want to start the encryption process, click on the "Start encryption" button.
- Depending on the amount of data, the process can take from a few seconds to several hours.
In order to read the removable disk encrypted with "BitLocker To Go" under "Windows Vista" and "Windows XP", you need the "BitLocker To Go reading tool".
