Will files be preserved on Windows 10 upgrade?
Upgrading to Windows 10 is quick, but of course your data should also be preserved. We explain what is safe and what needs to be secured.
What data is retained when upgrading Windows 10?
Generally, most of your files and programs remain unaffected by the upgrade to Windows 10. Exceptions are only a handful of programs:
- If your computer was delivered with a preinstalled operating system, there are often additional programs from the manufacturer. These programs can disappear when upgrading.
- Various programs that were part of Windows 7 and 8 are also affected. Namely, the programs that are no longer available under Windows 10 or that have been replaced by other versions.
- This affects, for example, the Windows Media Center and various games.
- All other documents, such as your "own files" or the "downloads" are retained.
