Blu Ray: what is it?
When buying films, you are often faced with the choice between Blu Ray and DVD. You can find out what Blu Ray is here.
Blu Ray - optical successor medium of the DVD
- A Blu Ray Disc is an optical storage medium, such as a CD or DVD.
- The name "Blu Ray" means blue ray - "Blu" means the English word "blue". It refers to the fact that the Blu Ray Disc is read with blue laser light.
- On the other hand, a normal laser player uses a red laser. Since the wavelength of blue light is shorter than that of red, smaller areas can be resolved with the Blu Ray. It is possible that the lines of the disc are closer together, which means that about 5 times as much can be saved on a Blu Ray as on a DVD.
- To play a Blu Ray you need a Blu Ray player. These are usually backwards compatible, which means that you can also watch your DVDs.
The Blu Ray is used here
Due to the larger storage capacity, there are some areas where Blu Rays displace DVDs.
- Feature films in HD resolution are sold on Blu Rays.
- Blu Rays are also often used in video games. Since the most common game consoles such as PlayStation 4 or Xbox One already have a Blu Ray player integrated, you as a user do not have to pay any attention.
