Bluetooth - simply explained
Related Videos: How Bluetooth Works (April 2024).
Bluetooth is found in numerous devices such as smartphones, laptops and music systems. In this practical tip, we explain exactly what Bluetooth is and how the technology works.
Bluetooth explains: The most important facts at a glance
Bluetooth is a special method for transmitting data by radio. This eliminates the need for a cable connection between two devices. Bluetooth can transmit any type of data, including music.
- The first version of Bluetooth was developed in 1999, since then Bluetooth has been continuously developed in cooperation by numerous companies such as HP, Intel and IBM. Version 4.0 of Bluetooth has been available since 2009, and Bluetooth 5.0 was introduced in 2016.
- There are different types of Bluetooth devices that have different ranges from 1 to 100 meters. In practice, there may be a distance of between 1 and 10 meters between the two Bluetooth devices so that the connection is established.
- The name Bluetooth is derived from the Danish king Harald Blauzahn. At the time, he created an alliance between Norway and Sweden, thus establishing a permanent connection between the two countries.
- The logo is also based on Harald Blauzahn. It is a combination of his initials H and B. However, not in Latin script, but in Germanic runes.
Bluetooth in practice: possible areas of application
Bluetooth is not the same as Bluetooth. Depending on the manufacturer's wishes, the Bluetooth device has different profiles. The "A2DP" profile is suitable for the transmission of music, while the "HSP" profile is only suitable for the transmission of speech via headsets.
- Bluetooth and cell phones can no longer be separated. Every smartphone and cell phone in the last 10 years is equipped with Bluetooth. As a rule, music is transmitted wirelessly to headphones or music systems using Bluetooth.
- Many computers and laptops are also equipped with Bluetooth. If this is not the case, you can retrofit Bluetooth with a small USB adapter. In most cases, wireless keyboards and mice are connected to the PC via Bluetooth.
- Hands-free systems in the car also always work via Bluetooth. The connection between car and cell phone is established with Bluetooth in a few seconds.
- In many cases, mobile speakers and music systems also come with Bluetooth. The controllers of game consoles such as the Wii, PlayStation or Xbox connect via Bluetooth.
- Any electronic device that sends or receives data can potentially be equipped with Bluetooth. Bluetooth is also used in industry or in hearing aids to read data.
Advantages and disadvantages of Bluetooth
- Before Bluetooth came into existence, infrared was the method of choice for wirelessly transferring data from A to B. Infrared was used, among other things, on old Nokia cell phones and GameBoys. However, the two devices had to be right next to each other and the transmission speed was also very slow.
- Bluetooth has remedied this and is still being developed today. In the past few years, this has primarily increased the transmission rate, improved security and reduced power consumption.
- In the meantime, more and more devices are using WLAN instead of Bluetooth to transfer data. This trend can be observed especially in music systems. With large amounts of data and long distances, Bluetooth still lags behind today.
- Bluetooth transmits on the frequency between 2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz. This can quickly lead to interference and shorter ranges if other radio operators such as routers or DECT telephones are nearby.
- Conclusion: Bluetooth has become the standard for fast and easy transfers between two devices. The weakness of Bluetooth only becomes clear with large amounts of data and long distances.
