Bluray: There are these formats
As with DVDs, Blurays also has format abbreviations that describe the properties and formats of the disc. In this practical tip, we explain what the individual endings mean.
Bluray formats - that's what the abbreviations mean
There are single-layer BDs (SL-BD) with approximately 25 GB of storage capacity and double-layer discs (DL-BD) with a whopping 50 GB. As for the endings, the Bluray is no different from the DVD. The endings are only attached to "BD" (Bluray disc) and not to DVD:
- The BD-ROM: A classic example would be feature films that you can buy on Bluray. "ROM" stands for "Read-only-Memory". So you can only read this disc and not write to it.
- The BD-R: If you want to burn a Bluray yourself, you will mostly use this format. The "R" stands for "Recordable", it is therefore unique and relatively inexpensive to write on.
- The BD-RE: The most expensive format can be rewritten up to a thousand times: The "RE" stands for "Rewritable".
