Remove Branding - Instructions for Android Phones
Many mobile operators are putting their stamp on smartphones. Use this guide to remove branding from Android phones.
Branding on Android smartphones: what is it actually?
- Smartphones that were bought directly from a mobile operator often have what is known as branding.
- With this, Telekom, Vodafone and Co. signal that this smartphone was originally bought there.
- The providers make small software changes: Provider logos are displayed at the start, bookmarks are created in the browser and own apps are preinstalled.
- Branding is therefore its own firmware that has been adapted by the mobile phone manufacturer.
- This reveals a decisive disadvantage of branding: Updates for devices with branding are only offered some time later, since the mobile operator adapts the firmware before it is released for the branded devices. Branding also reduces the resale value.
- You can remove the branding by installing the original firmware on your device without branding.
How to remove branding from Android device?
- Removing the branding is not entirely risk-free. The branded firmware is exchanged for a non-branded, so-called DACH or stock firmware.
- If something goes wrong during the process, irreparable damage to the smartphone can occur.
- It is important that you install the correct firmware for your device. One speaks of "flashing".
- In the following we will show you how to prepare and carry out the "debranding". All steps are at your own risk - we accept no liability for damage.
Remove branding: the preparation
- First you need the right program to "flash" on your PC.
- Depending on the manufacturer, you need different software. Use Odin for Samsung devices, flash Motorola phones with RSD Lite, use minimal ADB for HTC smartphones and other manufacturers.
- You also need the appropriate drivers for your smartphone on your PC.
Remove branding: the right firmware for Android phones
- Finally, you need an unbranded firmware for your cell phone. It is important that you pay close attention to the correct model name.
- The exact name for a Samsung Galaxy S7 is, for example, "SM-G930F".
- Also make sure to download the latest German firmware.
- For Samsung devices, for example, you can find the correct firmware on the SamMobile.com page. You will often find what you are looking for at EasyFirmware.com or here in the CHIP forum.
Prepare smartphone for debranding
- Charge your cell phone's battery fully.
- Remove the SIM card and, if present, the memory card.
- Back up all the data you still need. All data is deleted when flashing.
- Put your phone in download mode. Depending on the manufacturer, this works with a different key combination when switching on.
Let's go: Flash Android smartphone
- Start the downloaded flashing software on your PC.
- Connect your phone to your computer with a USB cable.
- Select the downloaded firmware files and start the flash process.
- Wait until the program has completed and confirmed the process. The cell phone will restart several times. Always leave the cable plugged in.
Flash failed: back to the old firmware?
- In the event of a warranty claim or when the smartphone is sold, you can return to the branded firmware.
- Nevertheless, the excursion may not go unnoticed.
- To load the branded firmware again, proceed as for the first flash.
- But this time download the version branded by your manufacturer and play.
