Brown spots in avocado: you have to pay attention to that
If an avocado has brown spots in the flesh, this is usually no reason to simply throw away the exotic fruit. On the contrary, most of the time it is just a blemish that can have different reasons.
Avocado - that's the reason for the brown spots
If the avocado exudes an unpleasant, musty smell after you have cut the fruit open, you should dispose of the avocado immediately. The same is true, of course, as soon as you discover a hint of mold in or on avocados or any other fruit.
- On the other hand, if the avocado has brown spots, it doesn't look very appetizing, but it is usually completely harmless to your health. The brown spots can have different causes:
- Oxidation : Everyone knows it, you peel an apple and within a few minutes the fruit turns ugly brown. The brownish discoloration is ultimately caused by a somewhat more complex oxidation process that is caused by oxygen. For these reasons, you should consume the avocado promptly or pack it airtight immediately after peeling or opening.
- Overripe : Avocados ripen relatively quickly and similar to bananas, for example, the flesh gets brown spots over time. However, the brown spots on the banana and the avocado are no reason to simply throw away the fruit. However, the brown spots show you very clearly that you should eat or process the fruit quickly.
- One variant would be to process the overripe fruit into an avocado dip or a smoothie.
