Every address on a letter is machine-read by Swiss Post. That is why you have to write the recipient in the right place - if the lettering is incorrect, the letter may even come back.
Label letters: The recipient and sender must be at this point
In principle, you can write the address wherever you want. However, your mail must then be sorted by hand, so that there may be considerable delays in delivery. In the worst case, the letter will go back to you.
- Basically, only the front of the letter should be labeled. The letter is not read on the back, information is not processed here.
- You can place your own address on the top left. However, you should mark this with the heading "Sender". Alternatively, you can also use the back.
- The address of the recipient is placed in the lower right. Name, street, postcode with city and, if necessary, the country belong in a separate column.
- Leave around 2 cm of space to the edge downwards and to the right. This way your mail can be read in perfectly. Of course, the stamp belongs in the top right corner.
Label envelopes of different sizes
You have to consider this with the different sizes of the envelopes:
- For letters with a window, the address is placed on the top left of the A4 letter so that after folding it can be seen in the lower left corner of the letter.
- The easiest way to create such a letter is with this free template. Alternatively, you can create your own letterhead.
- For large letters in A4 without a window, be sure to label them in landscape format like a small letter. Because only large letters with a window are recognized in portrait format and read correctly through the window.
- The so-called compact letters are also labeled like normal letters. Compact letters have the size DIN A5. They are twice the size of normal letters and half the size of A4 letters.
