Send a letter without a stamp - how it works
Deutsche Post offers a service that almost nobody knows: You can also send a letter without a stamp. All you need is your cell phone and a pen. We show you how it works.
Send a letter without a stamp: frank by mobile phone
With the "Handyporto" service from Deutsche Post, you can frank a letter anytime and anywhere using your mobile phone and a pen. The service costs a little more than a normal stamp: 1.20 euros for a standard letter, 1 euro for a postcard. And this is how cellphone postage works:
- Send an SMS with the content "Letter" or "Postcard" to 22122. Alternatively, you can use the "Post mobil" app.
- You will receive a twelve-digit code via SMS within a few seconds.
- Write this code legibly on the top right of the letter where the stamp is missing. In three rows of four digits each.
- Now you can insert the letter as usual.
Alternative: frank the letter online
Because of the surcharge, the cell phone postage only pays off when you are on the go and urgently need a stamp. If you run out of stamps at home, you can frank your mail online. Deutsche Post does not charge any extra for this service.
