Fight blackberries and remove them - so it works in the long run
It is not only the enormous growth of the shrubs that makes removal difficult, the thorns of the blackberries also cause further problems. How you can still remove the berries, read here:
- First of all, you should put on long clothes. The best is a pair of jeans or cut-resistant trousers. You should also cover your arms and neck, depending on how tall the blackberries have already grown. Sturdy shoes and gloves are also important, as are safety glasses. As an aid, you should have a hedge trimmer, a spade with a ground edge and a pickaxe ready. A chopper to remove the remains is also useful.
- Once you've protected your body, you're ready to go. To do this, first take the hedge trimmer. With this you remove all branches that you can reach. Make sure you cut them as deep as possible. So that you don't have to touch the branches twice, you should chop them immediately after cutting.
- When you've removed all of the branches, add the spade and pickaxe. With these you can now remove the rhizomes and branches that you could not remove before. Depending on the size of the blackberry area, this work is very tiring, especially because you have to dig out all the roots. However, you should not use chemical products to remove them, as they can permanently damage the soil.
- If you do not want to dig out the blackberries or are physically unable to do so, you can also fight and remove them with a little time. To do this, stretch a black film over the blackberries. The film must be so thick and stable that no sunlight can reach the blackberries. To ensure that the sides are sealed, you should attach the foil with stones and ground anchors. After a few weeks, the blackberries will shrivel and you can remove them more easily.
- Tip: You can also remove the blackberries in winter. Then there are no more fruits and leaves and the roots can be easily removed as long as the ground is not frozen. Late autumn is also very suitable. To prevent blackberries from forming on the spot next spring, cover the area with a black film as well. You can then remove them towards the end of May. Your blackberries are so permanently fought.
