Caliber: remove DRM - does it work?
In this practical tip, we explain whether it is technically possible to remove the DRM copy protection using Caliber and whether this is even allowed.
Caliber: remove DRM - does it work?
DRM means digital rights management, which stands for digital rights management in German. This protection device is attached to some digital content such as eBooks so that they cannot be copied.
- With programs like Caliber, it is technically possible to remove this copy protection via plugins. However, it is not allowed to remove DRM protection - even if you have legally purchased the eBook and want to make a private copy. This is regulated in Section 95a of the Copyright Act (UrhR).
- According to Section 108b of the Copyright Law you have nothing to fear from a criminal law point of view if it is a private copy. However, you can be prosecuted by the author of the work under civil law.
- If you still remove the DRM copy protection via Caliber or another program, you are acting illegally. Under no circumstances should you try to bypass this copy protection.
- From a legal point of view, it is therefore only allowed to convert properly purchased eBooks without DRM using Caliber. We will show you how to do this here.
