Case modding: the best tips
In this article we show you the best tips for case modding. With case modding you can make your PC much nicer and let your imagination run wild. With the tips from this article, you'll know where to start and what's possible.
Case modding tip 1: The right case
If you work with a high-quality housing right from the start, you can prevent space problems and your options for expansion are enormous. Because no matter how good you are in handicrafts, without the right case you will quickly reach your limits in case modding.
- It is best to buy a high-quality housing that has good expansion options. You can find a good selection of such housings here in our price comparison. Then you can immediately decide whether you want a side window or not.
- If you ever want to install a water cooling system, make sure that there are at least 2x240mm recesses for radiators. Because you should plan at least that much space for CPU + GPU.
Case modding tip 2: Sleeved cables
With the sleeving of your cables, you can optically get a lot out of it and also improve your cable management. Therefore, this should definitely be one of the first steps.
- There is now a large selection of sleeves in all possible colors and combinations. After a short familiarization you have the hang of it and can create impressive cables yourself.
- If you are the owner of a good case, there is a second back wall behind the mainboard tray. You can stow cables behind this and clean up the inside of your PC. It also improves the airflow of your housing because the cables no longer hang in the airflow.
Case modding tip 3: Create your own cover for the power supply
Since the power adapter is not the nicest thing on the PC, you can build your own cover for it. This hides the tangle of cables in the bottom of the housing and can also engrave something like individual logos on the cover.
- It is best to start with a piece of cardboard from a box or something similar. Cut this until it fits properly. You can then draw or cut your own engravings in this piece of cardboard.
- With your stencil, you go to a local metal shop and have the cover made of metal. The costs for this are usually limited and should not exceed 100 €.
Case Modding Tip 4: Install water cooling
With water cooling, you not only keep your PC cool and quiet, but you can also get the most out of it visually. With a self-made water cooling there are no limits to your imagination and you decide at every step which components you want to install and in which version.
- Water cooling gives you the opportunity to design the inside of your PC completely according to your wishes. Regardless of whether you want a matt black look, colorful colors or copper tubes, with a little imagination all of this is possible. In our water cooling workshop, we will show you how you can successfully master the project.
- Completely self-made water cooling systems that cool the processor and the graphics card can quickly cost € 400-500. But qualitative components will also last for a few years. If you want to get started with water cooling, you can consider buying an Aio water cooling. This looks great, cools well, is pre-installed and does not require any maintenance.
Case modding tip 5: the last stage
Modifying the entire case according to a certain topic is probably the hardest challenge. As a reward, however, there is a unique housing that exactly corresponds to your ideas.
- To mold the entire case you should have metal tools. These are, for example, a Dremel with safety glasses, metal scissors and tools for measuring. It is best to familiarize yourself with painting metal. Make lots of detailed sketches before you start working. Because a mistake on the housing could mean that you have to buy a new one.
- If you don't mind taking a little longer to modd, you can try building your own case. For this you should be familiar with 3D modeling, have a good imagination and be familiar with the components of a PC. I wish you success!
