CD / DVD broken: Make the data carrier readable again
If a CD or DVD is no longer readable, in some cases you can repair the data carrier yourself or at least save the data stored on it. We'll show you how it works.
CD / DVD broken: How to make the data carrier readable again
Small scratches on the bottom can be quickly removed. Small and large scratches on the top of a CD / DVD are a challenge even for professionals.
- Try the broken CD or DVD in different drives. Access may not only work on the DVD player, but it may work on the PC.
- With the IsoBuster tool, you can read the data medium in some cases - even if it is damaged. The program does not stop reading after every scratch, so you can first copy the data to your computer.
- Note: The necessary basic functions of IsoBuster are free of charge, the paid functions are not required.
Repair broken CD / DVD with toothpaste yourself
Small scratches in the polycarbonate protective layer break the light from the laser, making the CD unreadable. Toothpaste removes a small portion of the protective layer, reducing the depth of the scratch.
- Only white toothpaste is best for repairs. Colored additives hinder the repair.
- Take a small dab of toothpaste and rub it into the bottom of the CD with a paper towel. Perform gentle, circular movements.
- You can stop the treatment after a minute. Let the toothpaste work for another minute.
- Wash the disk and dry it. Use lukewarm water if possible. The CD / DVD must be completely dry before you can use it again.
