CD / DVD drive: Clean lens - you have to pay attention to that
If dirt has accumulated on the lens of your CD drive over time, you can clean it. Here we explain how to clean the DVD drive quickly and gently.
The convenient solution - the cleaning disc
- You can get these relatively cheaply from specialist retailers for a few euros. You can get a small overview at Amazon.
- Put the CD in the DVD slot and let it play normally.
- The lens is then cleaned using the small, fine brushes on the underside of the CD.
- If cleaning using the CD has not had the desired effect, you should turn to the second tip.
Alternative solution - Thorough manual cleaning of the CD drive
As long as you still have a guarantee on your computer or drive, you should not remove or open the CD / DVD drive yourself. Otherwise your guarantee will expire.
- The second way to clean the lens is a little more complex, but also cheaper and usually more effective.
- Remove the drive after you have switched off the computer and pulled the power plug. With notebooks, you must also remove the battery before removing.
- Then loosen the base plate of the DVD drive by opening the four screws. You can then carefully pull off the top cover.
- After you have exposed the lens, carefully clean it with cotton swabs. You can wet the cotton swabs with a little water or pure alcohol to support them. However, you should use it very sparingly.
- Finally, assemble everything again and then your CD or DVD drive should function perfectly again.
Please note that you can only disassemble and, above all, disassemble the hardware only if you have the necessary knowledge. Occasionally cleaning the CDs and DVDs has also proven to be very useful.
