CD player hangs - what to do?

If your CD player always hangs when playing, it is mostly due to the laser. We'll show you exactly how to proceed and solve the problem.
If the CD player hangs - do the right thing
- In most cases, it already helps to clean the laser. It gets dirty over time and cannot read the CDs properly. Instructions for cleaning can be found in the next paragraph.
- Readjusting the laser can also help. This is millimeter work that a professional should do.
- If cleaning the laser does not help and the CD player is a bit older, you should consider buying a new device. In many cases, a new purchase is worth more than a repair.
CD player hangs: Clean laser
The laser is a very sensitive component. Therefore, be very careful when using the laser.
- Open the CD player and look for the laser. This is hidden behind a small lens (see picture).
- Take a cotton swab and dip it in cleaning alcohol. Pat the cotton swab. It must only be slightly damp so that no liquids end up next to the lens.
- Gently wipe the lens a few times. You can then use the dry end of the cotton swab briefly to wipe it down. Just wipe over it once, the remaining alcohol will evaporate after a few minutes.
- If the CD player is still hanging, the problem may be in the sled. The laser is attached to the slide, a component that you can easily move back and forth with your finger. Look for contaminants here and remove them.
In the next practical tip, we will show you what you can do if your CD player does not play CDs you have burned yourself.
