Switch off the charm bar in Windows 8 using the registry
Windows 8 shows the charm bar on the right edge of the screen as soon as you move the mouse pointer to the right of a screen corner. It can be switched off by a setting in the registry.
Deactivate charm bar via registry
- To do this, switch to the desktop view and press the key combination [Windows] + [R]. Then type in »regedit« and confirm with the Enter key.
- Now navigate to the key »HKEY_ CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ ImmersiveShell«.
- Now open the command »Edit | New | Key «, enter the name» EdgeUI «and press the Enter key.
- Open the new subkey and then the command »Edit | New | DWORDWert ". Enter "DisableCharmsHint" and confirm.
- Double-click this new entry to edit it. Now change its "value" to "1", confirm this with "OK" and close the registry. The change takes effect immediately and without restarting.
However, because the Charm bar offers direct access to some important functions such as the switch or the control panel, you should remember the key combination [Windows] + [C]. This continues to work despite the registry intervention.
