Chrome: change the encoding of the characters
Until recently, the Chrome browser showed cryptic characters on web pages, you had to change the character encoding. Umlauts and other special characters appear normal again.
Chrome: character encoding no longer needs to be changed
Up to version 55 of the Google Chrome browser, you could change the character encoding manually. This partially resulted in the websites no longer being displayed correctly if the settings were incorrect. In particular, special characters and umlauts were no longer displayed correctly if the coding was incorrect.
- Since version 55, Google Chrome recognizes the correct encoding automatically, so that there are no more drawing errors. Therefore, make sure that you always update Chrome to the latest version.
- If you still want to change the character encoding on individual websites, it is best to use the free Addon Set Character Encoding.
- After installation, right-click anywhere on the current website and select the desired character encoding under Set Character Encoding .
Show special characters: Change character encoding in old Chrome versions
If you are still using an older version of Google Chrome, you will find the corresponding settings directly in the browser.
- In the top right corner of Chrome, click the menu icon with the three horizontal bars.
- In the Tools area, select the Automatically detect option under Coding .
- Then update the entire website with the key combination Ctrl + Shift + R.
- If that doesn't help, select another option in the Coding area. You can use the name of the character encoding, which usually corresponds to the language of the website displayed.
Extend Chrome with good add-ons
