Chrome: always open bookmarks in a new tab - does that work?
When you open a bookmark in Chrome, the webpage always opens in the current tab. This guide shows you how to automatically open bookmarks in the new tab so that the current tab is not closed.
How to open bookmarks in a new tab
Unfortunately, there is no option in the Chrome settings to automatically open bookmarks in a new tab with a simple left click. However, there are a few tricks you can use to create this function:
- You can call up the desired behavior with a simple key combination: If you hold down the [Ctrl] key while opening a bookmark, the website opens in a new tab.
- Are you using a computer mouse with a mouse wheel button? Then you can open your bookmarks in a new tab by clicking the mouse wheel.
- The last option requires some work once, but then works best: Instead of the direct link, you can run a short Javascript code as a bookmark that opens the entered web address in a new tab. The details are in the next section.
Chrome: Javascript as a bookmark
Here you have to replace the bookmark link with the code "javascript: window.open (" // www.chip.de ")" (without quotation marks). The main disadvantage of this method is that the favicons are lost. You can now easily open bookmarks with a left click in a new tab.
- Press [Ctrl] + [Shift] + [O] to open the bookmark manager.
- Now right-click on the bookmark and select "Edit" or "Edit".
- Now enter the following code in the URL line: javascript: window.open ("// www.chip.de").
- The bookmark from the CHIP website is then always opened in a new tab.
