Are you looking for a good browser alternative for Firefox or IE but cannot choose between Chrome and Safari? We help you with a comparison of the two browsers.
Chrome vs. Safari: The Google browser can
Google Chrome is already in version 72. Among other things, the browser wants to score with speed and many add-ons. But Chrome also cuts a fine figure in the other areas:
- Speed: Chrome starts quickly and builds all websites quickly. The Google browser has the edge over competitors like Firefox and Safari.
- Stability and add-ons: You can control Google's additional services such as YouTube and Gmail directly in the browser bar. You can also find numerous extensions in the Chrome Web Store. The range here is similar to that of the competitor Firefox. Chrome also runs stably with many add-ons.
- Networking: Chrome works best with a Google account: you can use it to synchronize functions such as bookmarks between computers, smartphones and tablets. All you need is the corresponding Android or iOS app. You can also stream videos and music to the Chromecast.
- Security: In contrast to Firefox, Chrome builds on sandbox technology. It seals off the operating system from the browser. So your system is better protected while surfing. In addition, Google pays bonuses when users discover a vulnerability. This eliminates bugs and security gaps very quickly. But the browser also has its downsides: Chrome should transmit user data such as search line and URL input to the US company unencrypted if you do not manually deactivate this in the advanced settings.
- Compatibility: You can use Google Chrome under the vast majority of operating systems - whether iOS or Android, Windows, Linux or macOS.
Safari: Apple's own browser
Safari is pre-installed on all Apple devices. Here, too, Apple relies on a simple user interface and the familiar Mac design.
- Speed: Safari looks slower than Chrome in direct comparison. Pages load a bit longer and you also have to wait for Safari to start. However, the Apple browser still performs very well in online performance tests.
- Stability and add-ons: Safari is naturally perfectly coordinated as an Apple product on iOS. The browser is pre-installed on every iPhone or iPad and runs without problems. Since version 5 you can also integrate useful add-ons. However, the offer is nowhere near the Chrome Store.
- Networking: You can save your bookmarks, histories and passwords in iCloud. This makes them available on all of your Apple devices. Android users cannot access the data. Safari also refuses to work on the Chromecast. For this you can connect the browser to the Apple TV.
- Security: At Apple, bug reports are sometimes processed very slowly. Otherwise, the security is comparably good. Thanks to the closed system, you are particularly well protected on Mac and iPhone.
- Compatibility: If you want to use Safari as a browser, you must have an Apple device. The version for Windows was discontinued years ago, so Safari only runs on Mac, iPad or iPhone.
Conclusion: Chrome and Safari stay head to head
With Chrome and Safari you get two fast and successful browsers. However, every program has its advantages and disadvantages:
- Chrome is slightly faster than Safari and runs on all major operating systems. Safari, on the other hand, is perfectly matched to Apple devices.
- So if you work a lot with Android smartphones and YouTube or have a Chromecast, you'd better grab Google Chrome. Then you have access to your data everywhere, such as bookmarks or open tabs.
- If you have an iPhone, iPad or an iMac, Safari is an ideal addition. Thanks to the iCloud, you have all the data at hand.
