In the meantime, not only the Chrome version for the PC has an offline mode, but also the Android app of the browser. In this practical tip, we will show you how you can use the practical feature.
Android: use offline mode in Chrome - how it works
Since version 55, Google Chrome for Android has its own offline mode. As on a PC, you can save websites, pictures and videos and call them up later without an internet connection. That's how it's done:
- First start Google Chrome on your Android device with an active internet connection and open the desired website.
- Then tap on the menu symbol with the three vertically arranged dots in the top right corner.
- There you will find a download symbol in the form of an arrow pointing downwards. If you tap this, the current website will be downloaded completely.
- To display the offline website, tap the menu icon again and then tap the "Downloads" entry.
- There you will find a list of all of your downloaded files and saved websites. Tap on the desired homepage to switch to offline mode.
- You can tell from the "Offline" notice in front of the URL that you are currently in offline mode. To leave it again, simply enter another address or tap on a link.
- Note: With some videos you will find a download icon directly in the playback window. Tap this to download only the respective clip and not the entire website.
Google Chrome: The Limits of Offline Mode
The offline mode in Google Chrome for Android is practical and helps you especially if you only have a small amount of data available. However, there are some limitations so far:
- So you can currently only download the website shown. This means: If you tap on a further link in this, you are online again. Whole link references cannot be saved.
- In addition, Google Chrome does not back up flash content or protected video or audio files where the download has been deactivated by the website operator.
- Finally, there are other problems with endlessly scrolling websites such as blogs or Google Images Search. Google Chrome only downloads them to the point up to which you have already called them up.
- Nevertheless, the offline mode is a good alternative to third-party apps such as "Pocket", especially for long instructions, messages or short videos.
