If Chrome shows you the "Update failed" message, the update is not working properly. In this post, we'll show you how to fix the problem.
Chrome update does not work: Windows compatibility mode
Chrome usually installs updates automatically. However, updates are no longer available for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 and 10.8. To continue receiving Chrome updates, you must be using a newer operating system. Run the browser in Windows compatibility mode, although for example you have installed Windows 7, deactivate the mode:
- To do this, right-click on the Chrome icon in your taskbar or program list.
- Navigate to "Properties" by right-clicking again and in the next window to "Compatibility".
- Remove the check mark from "Run program in compatibility mode for".
Chrome Update: Check for malware and update browser manually
First restart your computer and check whether you have an active internet connection.
- Open Chrome and see if the browser has automatically updated after the restart.
- To do this, first click on the three dots in the toolbar on the far right edge of the menu bar.
- Go to "Properties".
- Click on "About" in the left menu bar. You can now see whether your Chrome version is up to date.
- Download the Chrome Software Cleaner and use it to search for malware that prevents an update.
- You then have the option of removing the malware found.
- If no malware was found, download the current version of Chrome onto your computer.
- Uninstall the browser. However, do not remove the profile information here. In this way, favorites and Co. are retained.
- Then reinstall Chrome.
