Chromecast 1 vs Chromecast 2 - a comparison
Google has completely redesigned its Chromecast 1 - in addition to a new design, the Chromecast 2 also has some new functions. In this practical tip, we compare the two streaming sticks for you.
Chromecast 1 vs. Chromecast 2: these are the differences
- Design: Google has completely redesigned the Chromecast. Instead of a black stick, the Chromecast 2 is now a round device with a diameter of about five centimeters - available in black, yellow and red. An HDMI cable on the device provides the connection, with a magnet the Chromecast can be "folded" onto the cable.
- Performance: Google has installed a faster, more energy-efficient processor from the Marvell Armada 1500 Mini series in the new Chromecast. The working memory remains as usual at 512 MB, which is completely sufficient for a streaming stick. It seems surprising at first glance that the new Chromecast only has 256 MB of memory, while the Chromecast 1 still had 2 GB. The reason is that the new Chromecast needs less caching thanks to an improved processor and WiFi technology.
- WLAN interface: Instead of the 802.11 b / g / n (2.4GHz) WLAN standard, the Chromecast 2 now supports the newer standard 802.11 ac (2.4GHz / 5GHz). Videos are streamed smoothly. With the Chromecast 1, there was usually a short jerk at the beginning of high-resolution videos. Google has made improvements here.
- Software: The Chromecast software has an innovation called Fast Play. For example, the Netflix app connects to Chromecast 2 when you launch the app. When you click the transfer button, the movie you want appears immediately on your TV, while the Chromecast 1 is only now connecting. The Chromecast also detects which video you’re likely to want to watch next and preloads it. For example, you can play the next episode of a series without a break.
- Price: The Chromecast 2 is currently available for around 35 euros, just like the Chromecast 1.
- Conclusion: The Chromecast 2 primarily stands out from its predecessor due to its new design and improved WLAN technology. Since there is no difference in price, we advise you to buy a Chromecast 2 when purchasing a Chromecast 1. However, there is little reason for owners of the Chromecast 1 to upgrade.
