Use Chromecast with Kindle Fire HD - Here's how
You can also use Google’s Chromecast with Kindle Fire HD. However, this is only possible via detours. We show you how it works.
Chromecast and Kindle Fire HD - the app store problem
The Kindle Fire HD is actually an Android tablet. However, this is not immediately apparent. The tablet does not work with the Google Play Store, but with Amazon's own app store. However, the Chromecast app is not available there. In the following paragraphs we explain how you can still access the app.
Step 1: Allow third party apps to be installed on Kindle Fire HD
- Scroll down from top to bottom on your Kindle. A menu with various symbols will appear at the top of the screen.
- Click on "Settings". You will find this option on the far right (gear icon).
- Select "Applications".
- The first subitem is "Apps from unknown sources". This option is deactivated by default. Press the slide switch on the right to switch it on.
Step 2: Download the Chromecast app to the Kindle Fire HD via APK
APKs are the executable files of Android apps. They work similarly to EXE files on Windows and help you bypass the Google Play Store on your Kindle Fire HD:
- Download the 1mobilemarket APK to your Kindle. It automatically ends up in the "Downloads" browser folder. There you can select and install them.
- Open 1mobilemarket on your Kindle and search for the apps 'Chromecast', 'Youtube', 'Play Music' and 'Play Movies'. Install them on the Fire HD as well.
- Then open the Chromecast app and select your streaming stick.
Alternatively, you can root your Kindle Fire HD. In another practical tip, we explain how to install Android apps with APKs without the Google Play Store.
