Chrome and Chromium not only sound similar, the differences between the two browsers are also rather small. However, there are some components in Google Chrome that are missing in Chromium.
Chrome and Chromium: the differences
Chromium is an open source browser that contains large parts of Google Chrome's source code.
- Chromium runs on Windows, Linux, Android and Mac OS, but not on iOS devices such as an iPhone.
- The Chromium open source program is actually not intended for end users, but rather for developers.
- By the way, not only Google Chrome uses Chromium as the basis. Chromium can also be found in the Opera or Vivaldi browsers, for example. Every browser that you use on an Android device is based on it. In addition to Amazon Silk, well-known representatives are Edge for Android or Samsung Internet.
- In the future, Microsoft will also replace its browser engine with Chromium. Then all iOS browsers, Safari and Firefox remain independent.
- Chromium has its own rendering engine called Blink. This rendering engine interprets the website source code and then displays it.
- In contrast to Chrome, Chromium does not have its own flash player or integrated PDF viewer.
