cisvc.exe eats resources - what to do?
If the "cisvc.exe" service eats up to 100% of the CPU resources of your PC under Windows 7 or Vista and prevents you from working undisturbed, you can switch off the index service. How and where is explained here.
Find and deactivate the service in the system settings
Microsoft has hidden the service behind "cisvc.exe" well in the system settings. You can find it here:
- Click on "Start".
- Go to the "Control Panel".
- In this window, click on "Programs".
- Under the umbrella term "Programs and Functions" you will find the entry "Activate or deactivate Windows functions". Select this entry.
- The fourth term from the top of the list is called "Indexing Service". Remove the check mark and click "OK".
cisvc.exe was already deactivated but still appears
If you still find the service on your PC, it may be malware.
- Scan your PC with your virus scanner or download one here.
- If you find a virus, follow the instructions of the virus scanner.
