Open .cmd file: Here's how
Batch files were known in DOS, the predecessor of Windows. It used to be .bat, now it's .cmd. We show you how to open such a file here.
How to open a .cmd file
A .bat or a .cmd file are batch processes, but just text files. With a double click on the file, Windows does not open the file, but starts the associated software application if it is installed on the PC. To open the file, you need a simple text editor.
- If you want to open a .cmd file, click on it with the right mouse button.
- In the context menu, select a text editor, for example Notepad ++, in "Open with".
- You should only change the file if you are sure what you are doing - otherwise the associated program may no longer start.
