CoD Black Ops 2: Cannot connect to online service
Sometimes it happens that in Call of Duty Black Ops 2 you can no longer connect to the online service even though you have a working internet connection. We explain how to solve the problem in this practical tip.
No connection to online service in CoD Black Ops 2
The error message often appears when the Call of Duty servers are offline.
- You can check the server status at callofduty.com.
- To do this, select your console using the buttons below. With the status "Defcon 5" all servers are online, with "Defcon 1" you can expect severe restrictions.
Game files from CoD Black Ops 2 are damaged
You may also have an error in the game files.
- Open Steam and switch to the "Library" tab.
- Right-click the Black Ops 2 multi-player.
- Click on "Properties" in the context menu and select "Local files".
- Click the "Check game files for errors" button here.
- Steam then looks for errors. Once the search is complete and the errors have been resolved, you can try to connect to the online service again.
Update Steam
- Download the latest version of Steam.
- To do this, open Steam, click on "File" in the top right corner and select "Check for Steam Client Updates".
- Restart your computer after an update.
- Then try to connect to the CoD servers again.
Configure Windows Firewall for Call of Duty Black Ops 2
- Click on "Start" and navigate to the "Control Panel".
- Select "System and Security" and in the next step "Windows Firewall".
- On the left, click the "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall" option.
- Check the entries in which "Call of Duty" appears.
- Confirm with "OK" and restart Call of Duty Black Ops 2.
Reinstall Steam and Call of Duty Black Ops 2
If none of this works, you should re-install Steam and CoD Black Ops 2 on your system.

- Then insert the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 installation CDs or download the files again from the Steam library.
- You should then be able to log in to the CoD servers again without any problems.
