Color grading is an important part in the post-processing of films and videos. Adjusting the color creates a unique look, which ensures a high recognition effect and can trigger certain moods in the viewer.
This happens with color grading with videos
Color grading is one of the last steps when it comes to post-production of a film or video clip. Before the grading can even start, the film is cut and a color correction is made.
- The terms color correction and color grading are sometimes used simultaneously, but actually mean different processes. In color correction, the entire footage for a film should be adjusted to one another. This is especially necessary when filming with different cameras and the color rendering shows visible differences. In addition, basic settings for brightness, contrast, etc. are made during color correction, so that a balanced image is created.
- While color correction is primarily about technical aspects, color grading takes an artistic approach. As a video producer, you can give your film a unique look and consciously shape the mood of the film - similar to what happens with the background music.
- The main task of the Color Gardings is to support the general mood that should be created by a film or individual excerpts. This happens, among other things, through the use of certain color combinations. While cold colors like blue and green create a rather uncomfortable mood, warm yellow and red tones create a feeling of harmony.
- Contrast, brightness and brightness gradients can also influence the mood of a video and direct the viewer's gaze. For example, if you want to focus on a specific person, you can brighten them up and darken the surroundings. A generally low brightness can create a dark mood. Scenes with little contrast convey sadness and weakness, which can also be a desired stylistic device.
- Generally applicable principles are difficult to establish with color grading. Moods can be transported in different ways and a large part of the grading resonates with the personal touch of the producer. Recognizability is a factor that can and should be fundamentally supported by color grading, especially in the area of marketing films and advertising clips.
- Color grading is sometimes implemented directly in the editing program. Professional software such as Adobe Premiere Pro have appropriate tools on board. But there are also independent programs that were only developed for color grading. This includes DaVinci Resolve, which you can even use for free in private use.
