Computer does not shutdown - what to do?
If your computer shuts down slowly or not at all, there can be several reasons. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
Computer does not shut down - programs block the process
In most cases, certain services or entire programs are responsible for the fact that Windows cannot shut down. The deactivation often leads to the solution of the problem.
- Press the "Windows" and "R" keys simultaneously so that the "Execute" command opens.
- Enter "msconfig" here and confirm with "OK". The system configuration then opens.
- Switch to the "Services" tab and sort the list by "Manufacturer". You should not touch all the services of "Microsoft Corporation".
- Go through the rest of the services and disable any that you don't think are necessary. Only the services for your anti-virus software, as well as hardware such as graphics card and network card are really necessary. Services for other software can be safely deactivated.
- Switch to the "Startup" tab and sort out what is not absolutely necessary. If you are unsure about an entry, leave it activated.
- Then click the "OK" button and restart the system. If that doesn't work, let the computer crash after a few minutes. Now restart your computer, log in and shut it down as soon as it is ready for use.
- In most cases, the problem is resolved because the blocking software has been disabled.
Computer does not shutdown - more solutions
- Hardware: Another common cause is hardware that suddenly causes problems. Unplug everything possible and try to shutdown the PC. A wireless mouse is often the culprit.
- Processes: Check the task manager to see if there are any conspicuous processes. Stop all unnecessary services and try turning off the computer. In this way the cause can also be localized.
- Malware: Another option would be to search for malware. Malicious programs or viruses could deliberately slow down or prevent the process. We recommend a scan with the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program.
- Error log: If Windows detects the error itself, it is documented. If this is the case, you can read out the error in the Control Panel under the path "System and Security" -> "Administration" -> "Event Viewer".
