Change computer name under Windows - how it works
To change the computer name in Windows 7, you have to find a somewhat hidden function. We'll show you how to rename your computer on Windows 10 as well. This helps, for example, to differentiate your PC from other computers in the home network.
Change computer names: how it works on Windows 10
- Open the Control Panel and navigate to "System and Security"> "System".
- In the middle you will find the current computer name and can change it by clicking on "Change settings".
- A new window opens: In the already active tab "Computer name" click on the bottom button "Change".
- Now enter a new name and close all windows with "OK".
How to change the computer name in Windows 7
- Click on the start button and type "sysdm.cpl" (without quotes) in the search bar.
- Alternatively, you can also open the "Properties" via the start menu and right-click on "Computer".
- In the penultimate section you will also find the computer name, which you can change using the link next to it.
Windows XP: Rename computer
- Click on Start and open the "Properties" with a right click on the "My Computer".
- Here you can now rename your PC in the "Computer Name" tab.
