Read CSV - how it works
You can read out CSV files ("Comma-Separated Values") either with the editor or with Microsoft Excel. We will show you how to do this here.
Read out CSV file with the editor
If a simple representation of the CSV is enough, you can open the file with the editor:
- Right click on the CSV. In the context menu, select the "Open with ..." option.
- Select the "Editor" here.
- Then the CSV opens. The individual values are separated by a semicolon.
The easy way: Open CSV files in Excel
- Start Excel. Then click on the "File" button at the top right and then on "Open".
- Click the drop-down menu on the right. Look for the entry "Text files" here. Otherwise the CSV is not displayed.
- Select the CSV in the menu and click on "Open".
- The data of the CSV are displayed in tabular form.
If you have more plans: import CSV into Excel
If you need more functions, you can import the CSV with a special option:
- Start Excel and go to the "Data" tab.
- Select the "From text" button here.
- Navigate to the location of the CSV and open it.
- The text conversion wizard now opens. With the you can, for example, set the line from which the import of the CSV should begin or the separator with which numerical data should be separated.
- In this practical tip, we explain how you can use the wizard exactly.
