Ctfmon.exe - what is it?
In this practical tip, we explain what the ctfmon.exe process is.
ctfmon.exe: Microsoft process throttles system speed
- The ctfmon.exe process comes from an alternate user input for Office.
- Even if you quit all Microsoft Office programs, the Microsoft process continues. This reduces the speed of the system, especially with older PCs.
- You should therefore deactivate the "Alternative user input" in the Control Panel under "Programs and Functions". Do not click on "Uninstall" under "Microsoft Office", but on "Change".
- Under "Shared Office Features" remove the entry under "Alternative user input" and save the change via "Update".
- The ctfmon.exe process is typically found in the System32 folder. If it runs in a different folder with you, then you are probably dealing with a virus.
- In this case, start an anti-virus scan with "Avira AntiVir" or another security tool and also search your PC with a malware fighter such as "MalwareBytes".
