Rename file via CMD - how it works
You can rename files from the Command Prompt (CMD) in Windows. With this command, we show step by step in this article.
Windows: Rename files via CMD
Start the command prompt in Windows with the key combination [Windows] + [R] and the command "cmd". You can then rename individual files using the console.
- Use the following command with the quotation marks: ren "C: \ Path \ File.txt" "New.txt"
- An example: In the path "C: \ New Folder \" is the file "Test.txt", which you would like to rename to "Chip.txt". Here the command is as follows: ren "C: \ New Folder \ Test.txt" "Chip.txt"
- You can adapt the individual file and folder names to your respective data. It is only important that you start the command with "ren" and put the individual elements in quotation marks.
- By the way: The command also works with directories. Rename a folder with the following code: ren "C: \ old folder name" "new folder name"
