Transfer files from FTP server to OneDrive - how it works
If you want to transfer files from an FTP server to your OneDrive cloud storage, this is only possible in a detour. We explain to you in this practical tip how exactly you have to proceed.
Preparation: Set up OneDrive as a network drive
Unfortunately, OneDrive is not shown by default in FTP programs, so direct file transfer is not possible. If you want to copy data from an FTP server to your OneDrive, you must first set up OneDrive as a network drive.
- Press the key combination [Win] + [E] to open Windows Explorer.
- Click "This PC" in the left column and then click "Computer"> "Map Network Drive" in the menu bar.
- In the "Folder:" field, enter the following URL without quotes: "//d.docs.live.net/". Do not confirm your entry yet.
- Log in to OneDrive in your web browser. In the address line you will see an identification code at the end of the URL, which is assigned to your user account. Copy the sequence of letters and numbers after "cid =" to the clipboard.
- Then switch back to the "Map network drive" window and paste the code from the clipboard behind the URL in the folder input field. If you want, you can accept the default drive letter or choose another one. Confirm the process with "Finish".
- A new window opens in which you have to enter the login data of your OneDrive user account.
Transfer files from the FTP server to OneDrive
- After you set up OneDrive as a network drive, cloud storage is available in most applications like a local hard drive. Therefore, you can now use FTP programs such as FileZilla OneDrive as the destination for file transfers.
- The file transfer from the FTP server to OneDrive is then simply possible using drag-and-drop or the corresponding commands from your FTP software.
- Tip: So that you can quickly move files and folders back and forth, you should also integrate your FTP server as a network drive:
You can also use OneDrive offline. You can read how this works in our next practical tip.
