Apple is known to have built a closed system with its products. Nevertheless, you can transfer data from a USB stick to your iPad. This also works with an SD card (e.g. for photos).
Copy pictures and videos from the USB stick using an adapter
The easiest way to copy pictures and videos to the iPad. That works with every normal iOS version. The only requirement is a suitable USB adapter. The so-called "Camera Connection Kit" is available for both the older iPad versions and the new Lightning connection.
- First create a "DCIM" folder on your USB stick. Copy all of your photos or videos here that you want to transfer to the iPad.
- Now rename the files so that the name consists of eight letters or numbers, for example "foto_123.webp".
- Now connect the adapter and USB stick to the port on your tablet. Important: The power supply via the adapter is very limited. This leads to problems especially with 2.5 inch hard drives. These are usually not recognized by the iPad. So stick to a simple USB stick.
- The photo app opens after a few seconds. Here you can see all pictures and videos of the folder "DCIM". Mark the desired files with your fingertip to import them to the tablet.
Copy any files from the USB stick to the iPad - jailbreak
If you want to transfer other files to your iPad as well, you cannot avoid jailbreaking. In the meantime, the new iOS 7 can also be unlocked. Here we explain in detail how to free your iPad from Apple's bonds.
- After the jailbreak, start the alternative AppStore "Cydia".
- Switch to the right tab "Search" and look for the file manager "iFile". It can be used free of charge for 30 days after installation, after which almost three euros are due.
- Now start iFile from your homescreen and connect the USB stick to your iPad.
- After a few seconds, the entry "Flash memory" or "Flash drive" appears in the left column. Tap on it to open the file system of your USB stick. Now you can view, copy or delete all files.
- Important: Remove the USB stick by tapping the arrow next to the entry "Flash memory". If you simply remove the stick, you have to restart your tablet so that the adapter is recognized again.
Even easier: Connect your iPad to an external hard drive via WiFi.
