Transfer data from the Wii to the Wii U - Here's how
If you have purchased a Wii U, you can transfer your data from the Wii to the new system. For this purpose, Nintendo has set up a function that makes data transfer much easier. We show you how it works.
Wii on Wii U - You can transfer this data
Not all data is transferred during a system transfer. This includes, for example, most of the Wii channels. Your Wii settings are also not transferred, as are preinstalled WiiWare or "Virtual Console" titles that are not allowed to be transferred. Saved data from Gamecube software is also not supported. However, the points listed below are transferred:
- The data entered for the WiFi connection and Wii points as well as the purchase history from the shop are transferred.
- Mii characters and additionally downloaded additional software are included in the data transfer.
- Save data from Wii, WiiWare and "Virtual Console" titles are also transferred like WiiWare and "Virtual Console" software, unless the application generally prohibits this.
Data transfer from the Wii to the Wii U
Before transferring, please make sure that all data is in the system memory of the Wii. Data that is on an external hard drive should be copied to the system memory beforehand. In addition, all age restrictions set on the Wii must be lifted.
- Start your Wii U and then navigate to the Wii menu.
- Here you will find the menu item for Wii data transfer.
- Next you will see some instructions that you need for the transfer. Follow the instructions on the screen.
- Now you need an SD or SDHC card, which you insert into the card slot of your Wii U when the corresponding message appears.
- You will then be shown that you have to remove the SD card again. You should not change anything on your Wii U and only remove the card. The power supply must also remain active.
- Now start your Wii console and download the "Wii U" transfer tool from the Wii Shop channel. Then start it and follow the further instructions.
- Now you get an overview of which of your data has been copied to the SD card. Then remove your SD card after a message on the Wii screen.
- Now put the card back in your Wii U and follow the instructions on the screen. You can then use the data on your Wii U.
It is important to note that none of your Wii consoles will shut down while data is being transferred or an internal process is in progress. It is also important that your Wii and Wii U are connected to the Internet.
