Data protection for LG TVs: How to protect your privacy
Some SmartTV manufacturers like LG don't take data protection very seriously. Some of the usage habits also end up on Google's servers. With the following five precautions you can put an end to TV espionage and protect your privacy.
This is how you ensure adequate data protection for LG TVs
- Deactivate HbbTV: Your SmartTV can display additional information for channels with HbbTV (Hybrid broadcast broadband TV). This allows the broadcaster to analyze your usage behavior. If you do not need this function, you can deactivate it in the settings. To do this, open the "Settings" of your SmartTV and navigate to the "OPTION" section. This function can now be deactivated under "HbbTV".
- Keep firmware up to date: LG has reacted to the suspicion of sniffing. Spy functions are to be deactivated with a firmware update. To do this, go to the "Settings" of your SmartTV and navigate to the "SUPPORT" section. Under "Software update" your TV checks whether a new software version is available.
- Deactivate spy functions: In the "Settings" of your LG TV, there is a point in the "OPTION" section called "Collecting viewer data". Deactivate this function so that your TV does not send any information to LG.
- Do without Internet functions: Your SmartTV offers numerous apps from social networks or mail services with Internet access. In order to install these apps, you have to create an account with LG. This puts anonymity at very high risk.
- Do not connect your TV to the Internet: If you only use your TV for television, it does not need access to the Internet. This ensures the highest level of data security.
This practical tip tells you what to look out for when using your Smart TV without the Internet.
