YouTube offers the function of embedding videos on websites. You can find out which rules on data protection you should observe here in this practical tip.
Data protection at YouTube: Cookies must be identified
If you want to embed YouTube videos on a website, various cookies are set. However, this also brings with it some problems.
- If you embed a YouTube video with the standard setting on your website, several cookies are set for every person who visits this website, regardless of whether the video is played or not.
- However, at least one of these cookies is a multi-year cookie that should also be used for web tracking.
- According to §15 paragraph 3 TMG, such a cookie on the website must be identified by a note for the visitor and the visitor must be able to object.
YouTube: Activate extended data protection mode
YouTube has also recognized this problem and offers a way to embed the videos so that cookies are not used to create a profile.
- Open a YouTube video you want to embed.
- Then click "Share" and "Embed".
- Click on "Show more" to see more options. Check "Activate extended data protection mode" here.
In the next practical tip we will show you how you can embed a captcha on your website.
