Hide date and author for WordPress articles - how it works
By default, WordPress provides each article with date and author information. However, you can hide this data if you do not want it for your website. You can find out how to do this in this practical tip.
WordPress: Hide date and author via CSS in the editor
WordPress still does not offer you the option to hide the date and author data globally. This information is a system specification and is firmly anchored in the theme. To hide the unwanted data, you have to intervene in the code of your design.
- In the WordPress backend, navigate to "Design"> "Editor".
- You are now in the stylesheet ("style.css") of your current design. Copy the complete text of "style.css" and save it in a document on your hard drive. This step is particularly important because if the code is incorrectly manipulated, a lot can go wrong. In the worst case, your site is no longer accessible. You can use the backup to restore the old state if necessary.
- Now navigate to the end of "style.css" and enter the following code without quotes: ".entry-author-link, .entry-date {display: none;}".
- Save the changes and open your WordPress website in a new browser window. The author and date entries should no longer exist.
- Warning: As soon as you update your design, these changes have disappeared. You will then have to enter the code again.
- Sometimes a theme also offers the option of entering its own CSS code. If you see the entry "Custom CSS" under "Design", you can simply copy the code here and do not have to change the "style.css" file manually.
- If you have bought a premium theme, you are usually offered here in the settings to show or hide the author and date data by selection. Please refer to the instructions of the respective developer.
