The DeepL app hides a great translation program that Google and Co. refer to in their place. Until now, the translation service was only available online, but DeepL has recently become available as an app for both Windows and Mac.

Developing DeepL was a demanding task, as the founder of the company of the same name, Gereon Frahling, reported in an interview with the online portal Gründerzeit. Before the mathematician got down to business, he spent some time with the competition - at Google in New York.
- In 2007 Frahling founded the startup Linguee and went to retreat with his colleague Leonard Fink to work on a significantly improved web dictionary. After around 18 months, the two presented the Linguee web dictionary.
- The dictionary differs from others in that it is able to process linguistic information. Linguee searches the web for corresponding translations and delivers not only individual words, but also complete phrases. The searched words are presented in a suitable context, so that one can better judge whether the term is really correct for one's own translation.
- The program quickly became very popular and based on it, the Linguee team started to develop a neural network in 2016, from which DeppL emerged.
- Neural networks work similarly to our brains and are able to process several processes in parallel. Algorithms, on the other hand, that are used by many other translation programs, proceed successively. In addition, neural networks relate the results to one another and are capable of learning.
- The following year, the Cologne-based technology company changed its name from Linguee to DeepL and towards the end of 2017 the DeepL translator will be presented.
- DeepL has been available as an app for Windows and the MAC since the end of 2019, making working with the translation program even more convenient.
- Incidentally, a supercomputer that creates 5.1 petaflops ensures that you receive your translation in a flash. It is also ecologically correct, because the computer that is on Iceland is powered by hydropower.

DeepL translates into numerous languages
You could still report a lot about the exciting development process of the program, but much less about the app. Both the installation of the DeepL app and the use of the translation program are so easy that you hardly have to say anything about them.
- After downloading the free DeepL translation app and installing the program, you're ready to go.
- DeepL currently translates into eight languages, which is a proud 72 language combinations. In addition to German, the translation tool has previously mastered the languages English and French as well as Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Dutch and Russian.
- The free DeepL app is limited to 5, 000 characters and that is generally enough for private use. However, it is not a problem to have a longer text translated by DeepL if necessary.
- DeepL offers a paid version for larger translations. With the Pro app, you are not subject to any restrictions. The costs for DeepL Pro start at around 6 euros per month.
- If you want to have something translated, first mark the relevant text passage in your document. Then press the key combination Ctrl + C twice. The selected text is automatically transferred to the tool and you receive the translation almost simultaneously.
- Note: In order to work with DeepL you have to be online because the translation is done using a neural network.
- As so often in life, this gift is not entirely unselfish. The translations are used to further develop the program. You should also keep in mind that this app, as good as the translation program works, is not always error-free. For important translations, you should not blindly rely on the tool.

By default, DeepL starts automatically with Windows. If you often need translations, this is quite practical. Otherwise, it is better to remove the program from the autostart file, as it can help the computer to slow down.
