The process was canceled due to current restrictions
The error message "The process was canceled due to current restrictions" or a similar message under Windows appears together with the symptom that a program such as Firefox can no longer be opened. We show you how to do this in our practical tip.
Process canceled due to restrictions - check the registry
The error code appears when a so-called policy has been set - mostly due to a virus, malware or a faulty Windows update.
- Start "Run" in the start menu or with [Win] + [R] and type in "regedit". Confirm with [Enter].
- Navigate to the path "HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer \ disallowrun" and delete any entries that contain an application such as "firefox.exe" or others.
- Repeat the whole process with the path "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer \ disallowrun".
- Control your PC for malicious software with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You can read how to do this in this practical tip.
