Desktop window manager has stopped working. You can do that
If Windows reports that the desktop window manager (dwm.exe) has stopped working, the Aero design feature cannot start. We'll show you how to solve the problem.
Windows: Desktop window manager no longer runs
The error can have several causes and can even lead to blue screens. First, you should test and repair your system with the following three steps.
- Start service: Simultaneously press the "Windows" and "R" keys so that the "Execute" command opens. Enter "services.msc" here and confirm with "OK". Right-click on the "Session Manager for Desktop Window Manager" service and select "Properties". Set the startup type to "Automatic" and restart the service.
- Check Windows files: Start the command prompt as administrator and enter the command "sfc / scannow" there. The system files are then checked and repaired if necessary.
- Check file system: Simultaneously press the "Windows" and "E" keys so that Explorer opens. Find your hard drive here and right-click to select "Properties". Go to the "Tools" tab above and click on the "Check" button (see picture).
Desktop window manager doesn't work - other solutions
- Graphics card: Aero is a Windows graphics feature. Therefore, download and install the latest version of the graphics card driver. Instructions can be found in the following practical tips for graphics cards from Nvidia and ATI.
- Changes: If you have installed programs or installed new hardware in the last few days, undo the steps if possible. System recovery can also solve the problem.
- BIOS: A BIOS update also helped some users. However, this is a complex process that laypersons should not carry out.
- If all of this does not help, you can refresh or reinstall Windows in the last instance. In the following video we show how this works under Windows 7.
